W.P. Carey Foundation
The W.P. Carey Foundation has made a generous pledge commitment of a $1M bequest to the Harbor in honor of continuing the legacy of Emily Carey and her lifetime commitment to the educational development of young children. This pledge also honors the vision of our founder, Tony Duke and the Harbor’s 75th Anniversary. The Carey Foundation’s leadership gift will help fund the expansion of the newly-named Emily N. Carey Preschool from 75 children to 300 children over the next three years. The expansion will significantly impact Harlem in coordination with the national Early Learning Initiative focused on preparing preschoolers to be kindergarten ready to address the achievement gap. The W. P. Carey Foundation joins the Harbor’s founder, and the late Robert V. Tishman as members of the Tony Duke Founder’s Circle, established through the generosity of Tony through the camp sale in 2011. This recognition program celebrates leadership support, represented by longstanding family relationships.

Pershing Square
In addition to generous financial support, under the direction of Harbor Board President Bill Ackman, Pershing Square Capital Management, LP, provides in-kind services to the Harbor to facilitate strategic public relations, state of the art technology and general management consultation.

Weil, Gotshal and Manges LLP
In addition to generous financial support, under the direction of Harbor Board Chairman Steve Dannhauser, Weil, Gotshal and Manges, LLP provides year-round legal services for a variety of Harbor activities, programs and organizational management priorities. Weil has also hosted the Harbor’s Preschool to an annual holiday party at the Weil offices on 59th and 5th Avenue for more than a decade.

Citigroup
Citigroup is the Harbor’s newest corporate partner, providing generous leadership support to help us further the educational and arts achievements of highly motivated children during our 75th Anniversary Year. Citigroup has provided longstanding support to the Harbor since 1972. On June 7, 2012, the Harbor honored CEO Vikram Pandit during the 2012 Salute to Achievement gala and fundraiser.

EDUCATION PARTNERS

New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD)
The New York City DYCD has funded the Harbor’s Jr./Sr. Education Program for approximately 20 years, supporting the Harbor’s ability to deliver Out of School Time services to elementary school age children (5 – 12 years old). The DYCD was created in 1996 to support New York City youth and their families by funding a wide range of high-quality youth and community development programs and is committed to building and expanding on partnerships that generate innovative and practical programs for youth, their families and communities.

U.S. Department of Education (USDOE)
The USDOE has funded the Harbor’s Upward Bound College Readiness program for 32 years, supporting the Harbor’s. The USDOE, through its TRIO Programs, identifies and provides services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. Its programs are targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to post baccalaureate programs.

New York ADMINISTRATION OF CHILDREN SERVICES (ACS)
ACS has been a funder of the Harbor Preschool Program for 40 years. The Harbor currently receives ACS funding to serve 55 preschoolers and 10 toddlers. ACS is the City’s child welfare agency, dedicated to protecting children, strengthening families and providing childcare and Head Start programs. Along with its community partners, it provides neighborhood-based services to help ensure children grow up in safe, permanent homes with strong families. Its division of Child Care administers the largest publicly-funded childcare system in the country, serving infants, toddlers, and school-age children. ACS’s subsidized child care service promotes family well-being by allowing parents to maintain employment; and provides children with a solid foundation to develop physically, socially, and emotionally; and promotes school readiness by supporting preschool programs.

CENTRAL PARK CONSERVANCY AND NEW YORK PARKS AND RECREATION
Boys & Girls Harbor and the Central Park Conservancy, Inc. are developing educational collaborations focused on environmental stewardship, while also strengthening the intellectual capacity of our program participants in the fields of health, math, science, biology, and literacy, to name a few. The close proximity of Central Park to the Harbor, as well as the location of our headquarters in the same building as the Conservancy’s education, volunteer, and visitors services departments, provides meaningful opportunities to collaborate with the Conservancy to develop teacher lesson plans, and take advantage of guided walking tours, service projects, and a variety of in-Park public programming. The Harbor annually distributes free Central Park Conservancy literature and educational materials to Harbor parents with the expected outcome of Central Park becoming an “outdoor anchor” within their community — to enjoy it, learn from it, and ultimately help steward Central Park as one of the most valuable resources in New York City.

The Harbor is planning for participation in the Parks Department’s Swim for Life program when the Heckscher Building pool and swim program re-opens, following a renovation in celebration of its 75th Anniversary year.

The East Harlem Arts and Education Local Development Corporation (East Harlem Center)
The East Harlem Center, located in the Heckscher building, is primarily a collaboration of education and arts non-profit organizations whose missions are to strengthen the sense of shared community and culture among peoples of differing backgrounds through education and the arts. The long-term goal of the East Harlem Center and Boys & Girls Harbor is to increase the number of children, families and adults served in Harlem. We share a commitment to the following objectives:

Preserve a City-owned historic building (1921, Heckscher family) by facilitating major renovations with significantly less use of City funds.
Promote the City-owned Heckscher building as a dynamic hub for education and the arts in Harlem.
Strengthen strategic partnerships between building tenants.
Protect the City’s $37M investment to renovate the ground floor of the Heckscher building and other public spaces.

The East Harlem Center manages the building, and the Harbor appoints four of the six board members. The Harbor’s CFO serves as the Treasurer-Secretary for the East Harlem Center, and Harbor designees help oversee daily operation of the building.

EL MUSEO DEL BARRIO

Harbor and El Museo educators have identified ways to collaborate programmatically to best benefit Harbor students, their families, and the patrons of El Museo, also located in the Heckscher building. El Museo is dedicated to providing school programs rooted in cultural empowerment and civic engagement. All of El Museo’s K-12 programs address the New York State Learning Standards and the NYC DOE Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts. Harbor students have ongoing access to El Museo programs, including admission-free events such as Super Sabado (Saturday), Museum Mile, the Three Kings Day Parade in January and “Oh Snap” Young People, Powerful Voices, a spoken word/oral language event for teens. Harbor teachers have access to educator workshops, and Harbor and El Museo educators are currently collaborating on curriculum about El Museo’s Caribbean: Crossroads of the World exhibit coming in June 2012. Lesson plans will allow Harbor students to examine objects from the entire period, understanding the circumstances in which these works were created and the impact that African, European, and other influences have in many Caribbean cultures. HARBOR SCIENCE AND ARTS CHARTER SCHOOL
Boys & Girls Harbor and the Harbor Science and Arts Charter School (HSACS), also located in the Heckscher building, have worked together to provide vital services to students and parents in Harlem for more than a decade, from the initial opening of the school in 2000. The Harbor provides HSACS students and families with arts-enriched educational programs through our preschool, extended learning opportunities in our afterschool services, instruction in the performing arts during the critical afterschool hours, and an eight-week summer arts and academic enrichment camp. This year, the Harbor proudly serves more than 100 HSACS students. HSACS anticipates relocating to a new school site in the summer of 2013. The Harbor will continue to serve HSACS students through our afterschool programs, and the Harbor Board and the HSACS Board are working together to achieve the smoothest transition possible for the school’s 245 students — with the students’ best interest in mind. We have established ongoing communication with parents to ensure that students shared by HSACS and the Harbor will continue to have access to Harbor programs. In keeping with its longstanding annual support of the school’s students and families, the Harbor is making an in-kind contribution for each enrolled student in the 2012–2013 school year. New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS)
OASAS has funded the Harbor’s Genesis/OASAS program for 39 years. Through its Bureau of Prevention, it leads New York state’s efforts to prevent alcohol and other drug problems. The delivery of prevention services is effected through a system consisting of some 180 providers, operating in a variety of settings, that deliver a wide range of services including evidence-based education programs, skills development workshops, training sessions for parents, and positive alternative activities for youth.

PERFORMING ARTS PARTNERS

New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA)
Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts is in year 3 of a Fiscal 2012 Cultural Development Fund Award for the DCA’s 3-year commitment. This funding provides general operating support for the Music Program and the Dance Program for students of all ages and levels of ability. The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs is dedicated to supporting and strengthening New York City’s vibrant cultural life. Among its primary missions is to ensure adequate public funding for non-profit organizations, both large and small, throughout the five boroughs.

Berklee City Music Network
Boys & Girls Harbor became the first New York City member of the Berklee City Music Network as they expanded to New York. The network is a non-profit education program of Berklee School of Music started by Curtis Warner that harnesses the energy of contemporary music to reach underserved 4th to 12th graders all across the country. The Berklee City Music Network connects Berklee City Music in Boston with like-minded music programs all over the country – including Washington, DC; Los Angeles; New Orleans; Seattle and now New York. The goal of the network is to provide kids with every opportunity to see their musical potential, including teaching and mentoring by Berklee graduates who live in their city. The City Music Network also offers the City Music Summer Scholarship, full-tuition scholarships to high school students enrolled at Network member sites through an application and audition process. The City Music Summer Scholarship enables the selected students, mostly juniors and seniors, to attend the Berklee Summer Performance Program in Boston.

Malcolm Matthews, a trumpet student of Gustavo Casenave, attended the 2011 Summer Program. Matthews accompanied Gustavo and Yo-Yo Ma in the performance of Libertango at the 2011 Harbor Salute.

New York State Council for the Arts (NYSCA)
Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts provides a guest artist series with free admission to classical, Latin and jazz performances for the East Harlem community, Harbor students and their parents through NYSCA support. An additional grant provides generous support to the Harbor Conservatory to provide pre-professional training in music and dance to more than 1,100 students annually. NYSCA is dedicated to preserving and expanding the rich diverse cultural resources that are and will become the heritage of New York State’s citizens. It supports the rights of all New Yorkers to access and experience the power of the arts and culture, and the vital contribution the arts make to the quality of life in New York communities. It broadens public access, appreciation, participation and education in the arts and culture throughout the state.

MELISSA MARK-VIVERITO, COUNCILMEMBER, MANHATTAN DISTRICT 8
The internationally-renown Latin Music Program in the Harbor received a grant from Melissa Mark-Viverito – Councilmember, Manhattan District 8, who currently serves as Chair of the Parks and Recreation Committee as well as Co-Chair of the NYC Progressive Caucus and Co-Chair of the Black, Latino and Asian Caucus.
